Port Harcourt — Akwa Ibom Co-operative Fisheries Association Limited has petitioned the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, over nonpayment of compensation by ExxonMobil to them for oil spillages caused by the company’s operations in Akwa Ibom State.

The petition signed by Chief Johnson F. Nfegwung and two others on behalf of the group, said ExxonMobil has refused to compensate them in respect to oil spillages caused by facilities of Exxonmobil from 1998 to 2012.

They asked the Senate President to use his good office and prevail on the management of ExxonMobil to compensate them for endless years of oil pollution, which according to them, destroyed their source of livelihoods.

The petition, among other four petitions addressed to the Senate President, was submitted during plenary on Tuesday by Sen Ayo Akinyelure.

Petitions were laid and referred to the Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions and to report back within four weeks.
