Speaking at the just concluded first quarter meeting of the Council, a member of the Council and Chairman of the Port Operations and Event Committee, Captain Ihenacho Ebubeogu, said that the government must be held accountable to its responsibility.
Ebubeogu, in his report to the Council, also said that the roads leading in and out of Ijora in Lagos State are in a state of disuse, adding that there is an urgent need to fix it as it constitutes a lot of hindrance to the free flow of traffic into and from the ports.
He said: “The roads around Ijora are in terrible shape and need to be fixed urgently. The bad roads constitute a lot of hindrance to efficient traffic management. Of our major concern is the linkage between the roads and the bridges leading to Apapa and descending from Apapa into Ijora.
“With trucks that are laden with different nature of cargoes, an accident at any of these bad spots can become very fundamental to both operational and security demands.
“The stretch from Mile 2 to Coconut to Liverpool, constructed at a massive cost with tax payers’ money has been rendered impassable and completely useless by several trucks that have made the road their private truck park.
“No one can make use of that stretch except one plies one way against traffic. The amount of filth generated from food packs, bottles (plastics and glass), human waste etc have filled the drainages on all sides of the expressway.
“Apart from the health epidemic this poses, all drainages have been blocked also. This will definitely reduce the life span of a road, newly constructed with billions of Naira foe the well-being of her citizenry.”
