Port Harcourt — The Federal Government and Enugu State government have agreed to establish the Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Committee, MIREMCO, to oversee mining companies’ adherence to environmental regulations in Enugu state.

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, during meeting with Enugu State Governor, Mr. Peter Mbah, said the collaboration aims to boost the growth of the mining industry in Enugu, known for its coal reserves.

Alake who posted these on his official X handle said the ongoing dialogue with Governor Mbah was part of his strategy to strengthen collaborations with state governments and create a favorable environment for mining activities nationwide.

He said, “I had a meeting with the Governor of Enugu State, Mr. Peter Mbah, where we agreed to establish the Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Committee (MIREMCO) to oversee mining companies’ adherence to environmental regulations in the state.

“This collaboration aims to boost the growth of the mining industry in Enugu, known for its coal reserves.

“I emphasized the historical importance of Enugu and its potential for economic revival through solid minerals. Governor Mbah and I discussed our joint efforts to ensure that the benefits of the mining sector are shared among all Nigerians now that Enugu has the autonomy to make independent decisions.

“Governor Mbah reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to tapping into Enugu’s abundant mineral wealth in partnership with the Federal Government.

“This meeting builds upon previous discussions I had with Governors at the Nigeria Governors Forum, where I urged cooperation to enhance the mining sector’s development’,” Alake tweeted.
