Port Harcourt — The Federal Government has charged the Sustainable Power and Irrigation for Nigeria, SPIN, Project to scale up delivery on food security through irrigated agriculture and expanded hydropower generation, underscoring the initiative’s central role in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The SPIN Project, backed by the World Bank, is designed to strengthen Nigeria’s irrigation infrastructure and hydropower capacity, supporting year-round farming, reducing dependence on rain-fed agriculture and enhancing energy security in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, issued the directive while addressing the SPIN Project management and staff, calling for intensified commitment and accelerated implementation to unlock the project’s full national impact.
“The SPIN Project is strategic to our national development objectives, particularly in achieving food security through irrigated agriculture and boosting hydropower generation,” Utsev said. “I urge the management and staff to intensify their efforts and sustain the momentum needed to deliver measurable results.”
The minister commended the SPIN team for its dedication since inception, noting that the project represents a critical intervention in addressing Nigeria’s agricultural productivity and clean energy needs.
“I commend the SPIN Project team for their commitment and professionalism,” he stated. “I also appreciate Mr. President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the World Bank for their unwavering support, which has ensured the smooth takeoff of this important project.”
Utsev reaffirmed the Federal Government’s resolve to deploy sustainable irrigation systems and renewable energy solutions as key drivers of inclusive growth, rural development and economic resilience.
“This administration remains fully committed to leveraging irrigation and hydropower as tools for national transformation,” he said.
“SPIN must remain focused, innovative and results-driven in delivering on this mandate.”
