Lagos — Parts of Lagos and Osun states have been plunged into prolonged power outages following separate disruptions to critical electricity infrastructure, with transmission line failures affecting supply in Lagos and flood damage crippling distribution facilities in parts of Osun.
The Eko Electricity Distribution Company, EKEDC, said electricity allocation to its network dropped after the Oshogbo–Ikeja 330kV and Benin–Egbin 330kV transmission lines went out of service, forcing the utility to implement load shedding across several business districts.
In a notice to customers, EKEDC attributed the outages to a grid disruption, stating that the failure of the two transmission lines had significantly reduced the volume of electricity available for distribution. The company said it was working closely with the national grid operator to restore normal supply as soon as the affected infrastructure is repaired.
The latest transmission setback comes barely a week after the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) declared force majeure on the Oworonshoki 132/33kV and Lekki 330/132kV substations after severe flooding submerged critical equipment. The incident has continued to disrupt electricity supply to several parts of Lagos.
Communities affected include Chevy View Estate, Chevron Drive, Agungi, Alpha Beach, Ikate, Elegushi, Carlton Gate, Kusenla, Victory Park Estate, Oniru, Maroko, Muri Okunola, Ajose Adeogun, Ligali Ayorinde, Aboyade Cole, Morinho Drive, Landmark Road, Igbo Efon, Igbokusu, Gbangbala, Platinum Way, Jakande/Coastal Road, OADC/Mayegun, Ajiran, Chevron Alternative Area and Osapa London, among others.
Residents in parts of Lekki, Agbara and Festac said they had endured several days of interrupted electricity and appealed for urgent intervention. Responding to complaints from customers in Festac, EKEDC explained that the area was receiving reduced power because of lower grid allocation and assured residents that full supply would resume once the transmission constraints are resolved.
Meanwhile, the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, IBEDC, confirmed that heavy rainfall and flooding at the Ilerin Injection Substation disrupted power supply to several communities in Osun State after a windstorm damaged key facilities.
According to the company, the flooding affected the Isare, Irogbo and Mount Carmel 11kV feeders, leaving Ifewara, Iwara, Bolorunduro, Irogbo, Ayeso, Odo-Oro, Wesley, Express Area, Ilerin, Irojo, Olomilagbala, Iwikun, Isare and neighbouring communities without electricity.
IBEDC said its technical teams had commenced repair works to restore supply as quickly as possible, while apologising to customers for the disruption caused by the weather-related incident.
