17 March 2017, Sweetcrude, Lagos — Zurich, Switzerland, March 16, 2017 – Substation to integrate electricity from efficient natural gas facility, boosting transmission capacity and enhancing power reliability for about one million homes

ABB today announced it has won an order from Bechtel Infrastructure and Power to provide a turnkey substation solution. The substation will integrate electricity generated by the Cricket Valley Energy Station, a new combined cycle natural gas-fueled power plant located in Dover. It will add more than 1,100 megawatts (MW) of power and enhance the reliability of the New York transmission grid, benefitting about a million homes in the region.

The 345 kilovolt (kV) gas insulated switchgear (GIS) substation will be built with the highest levels of reliability and safety. ABB’s GIS technology will enhance operational reliability, efficiency, and safety while minimizing substation footprint and maintenance requirements. This is the second such substation ABB is providing for Bechtel – the first being the 345kV GIS substation for the Hummel Energy Center to be energized later this year.

“This advanced GIS substation will boost transmission capacity, improve efficiency and enhance power reliability for millions of New Yorker consumers”, said Patrick Fragman, Managing Director of ABB’s Grid Integration business, a part of the company’s Power Grids division. “ABB’s world leading, robust and compact gas-insulated switchgear provides differentiated customer value, a key focus area of our Next Level strategy.”

ABB is the world’s leading supplier of turnkey air-insulated, gas-insulated and hybrid substations with voltage levels up to 1,100 kV. These substations enable the efficient and reliable transmission and distribution of electricity with minimum environmental impact, serving utility, industry and commercial customers as well as sectors like railways, urban transportation, and renewables.
