Port Harcourt — Akwa Ibom State has moved to position itself at the forefront of Nigeria’s emerging clean transport economy with the flag-off of the Ibom CNG Mass Transit Terminal in Uyo, a project expected to lower mobility costs, stimulate jobs and unlock new economic activity across the state.
This is as Governor Umo Eno has officially commenced construction of the terminal at Ikot Ekpe Offot, Uyo, describing it as a strategic investment aligned with his administration’s infrastructure-led growth agenda and Nigeria’s broader transition to cleaner energy.
“This project is part of our commitment to building a modern, world-class transport system that will ease movement, reduce transportation costs, create jobs, and boost tourism and economic activity across Akwa Ibom State,” Eno said at the flag-off ceremony.
The governor explained that the Ibom CNG Mass Transit Terminal will serve as a central hub connecting Uyo to all 31 local government areas through a fleet of compressed natural gas, CNG-powered buses, offering residents a cleaner, more affordable alternative to diesel-powered transportation.
Beyond passenger movement, the project is structured to deliver wider economic value.
According to Eno, the terminal will include CNG refuelling stations, training centres and support infrastructure, creating hundreds of direct and indirect employment opportunities.
“This is about improving the quality of life of our people and building a transport system that works for today and the future,” the governor stated.
“We are deliberately investing in infrastructure that delivers real value, promotes sustainability and supports inclusive growth across our state.”
SweetCrude Reports noted that the project aligns with growing subnational interest in natural gas utilisation, particularly as states seek cost-efficient and environmentally friendly transport solutions amid volatile fuel prices.
By integrating gas infrastructure with mass transit, the Akwa Ibom government is also positioning the state to benefit from Nigeria’s abundant natural gas resources while supporting national clean energy and decarbonisation objectives.
Governor Eno reaffirmed that his administration would continue to prioritise projects that combine economic impact, sustainability and long-term competitiveness, stressing that infrastructure development remains central to Akwa Ibom’s development strategy.
“We will continue to invest deliberately in infrastructure that delivers real value and supports growth across our state,” he said.
The Ibom CNG Mass Transit Terminal is expected to serve as a catalyst for broader private sector participation in gas-powered mobility and transport services within the South-South region.
