10 January 2016, Luanda — At least 960 megawatts will be added to the country’s electric system in June this year, with the launch of the second station of the Cambambe Hydroelectric Dam in northern Cuanza Norte province.
The information was released Thursday in Luanda by the minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista Borges, adding that the second Cambambe station will generate double the current capacity of the Capanda dam, in northern Malanje province.
Addressing the closing of the 1st joint ordinary session of the Economy and Real economy Commissions of the Cabinet Council, the minister said the first of the four machines installed in the new Cambambe dam will be launched.
In addition, the official stated, connection lines are being built to convey electricity to Luanda, Gabela city (Cuanza Sul) and Benguela (centre).
He added that the Dondo (Cuanza Norte)/Calulo (Cuanza Sul) and Dondo/Cassualala (Cuanza Norte) stretches are also being electrified.
Concerning the Laúca Hydroelectric Dam, under construction in northern Cuanza Norte province, the minister said the works have reached 65 percent.
He said he expects the two first machines of the dam to come into operation in June 2017, to produce 267 megawatts, before the last is launched in December the same year to produce 77 megawatts.
The minister stated that the Laúca line will connect Luanda, Malanje/Calandula, Huambo (centre) and Lubango (Huíla, centre).
He also spoke of the Soyo (northern Zaire) Combined Cycle, a project designed to produce electricity from natural gas in 2017, when the project will start generating 750 magawatts for Luanda (Viana, Catete, Kilamba, Camama and surrounding areas).
It is also meant to supply the municipality of Nzeto and Mbanza Congo city, Zaire province.
