18 May 2013, News Wires – The Angolan Ministry of Energy will increase the country’s electricity production capacity to 8,400 megawatt until the year 2025, against the current 1,200.
Energy and Water minister, João Baptista Borges disclosed this in Luanda.
The minister was speaking about “Energy and growth: World tendencies in Angola”, at the International Conference on Energy and Sustainable Development.”
João Baptista Borges said one of the purposes is to increase the country’s electrification rate from 30 to 60 percent, increment the access of people to power and the per capita consumption.
Improved efficiency of public firms, broader participation of privately-owned firms, reduction of the current 80 percent worth of subsidies corresponding to Akz 800 million a year and the construction of new infrastructures are some of the goals.
On the other hand, the minister stated that the interconnection of the transport system, incentive to the participation of the private market, restructuring of the public companies, planning in line with the development of local resources and review of the tariff model will also be taken into account in the process.
According to the source, US$6.0 million of investment were spent until 2013, and an investment of 16.2 million are expected until 2017.
João Baptista Borges informed that in the 2002-2012 period, the sector embarked on a new course that focused on the rehabilitation of infrastructure destroyed by the war, mainly those linked to power transport and distribution.
Until 2015, the minister added, the sector has set as the second period of development that includes the increase of people’s access to electricity.
