Los Angeles Fire Department said a hazardous materials investigation was under way following the incident, which created a slick described as knee-high in places and spreading over an area of more than half a mile.
In the overnight incident, a 20-inch above-ground trunkline ruptured in an industrial area of north-east Los Angeles, sending crude oil geysering 30 feet into the air, US National Public Radio reported.
The trunkline was shut off remotely following the leak in the Atwater Village industrial park area of West Grendales, which resulted in no injuries.
Several commercial businesses in the immediate area of the spill were impacted, including a gentleman’s club which was forced to evacuate its staff and patrons, whose cars were also affected.
