21 December 2011, Sweetcrude, WARRI—Ubulu communities in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State have cried out over the lack of electricity supply by the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) for more than three years.
A spokesman for the area, Mr. Charles Soeze, disclosed, Tuesday, that no fewer than 10 communities – Ubulu-Uku, Ubulu-Unor, Ubulu-Okiti, Aniagbala, Ashama, Anifekide, Egbuduaka, Adonte, Ewulu, among other towns – had been in darkness because of the selfish interest of a powerful politician who colluded with some PHCN officials to shortchange the people.
His words: “Investigation revealed that a politician within the Delta North, for his selfish interest, allegedly bridged the power supply at Otulu town, Delta North (Anioma) in order to serve his company properly or for the execution of contract awarded, without considering the sufferings of the people of Ubulu community, and also denying the federal government of revenue.
“As a result, the small businesses in the community have all grounded and the suffering of the masses residing here continued unabated. In this connection, worsening the unemployment situation and the people of the community continue to live in abject poverty.
“To those who could afford generators, the environment is already polluted because of the use of generators that fume twenty-four hours a week. To this end therefore, the health of the people in the community is deteriorating tremendously.”
He urged PHCN, Delta State government, the Delta State House of Assembly, and other relevant agencies to look into the issue with a view to bringing succour to the people.
