Port Harcourt — Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has called for a robust partnership with the Federal Government to advance the Agge deep seaport project, emphasizing its potential to transform the state’s economy.
The governor during a meeting with the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, highlighted the urgent need for federal support to realize the project which he described as crucial infrastructure initiative.
The governor pointed out that the Agge seaport could serve as a vital hub for trade and investment, reducing Nigeria’s dependency on oil and gas by tapping into the maritime sector, and announced that the state has already secured federal approval for the project and conducted necessary site surveys.
Diri underscored the importance of the project not just for Bayelsa but for the entire nation, said the Agge deep seaport project would create jobs, enhance economic activity, and attract both local and foreign investments.
He noted that the ongoing construction of key roads in the state would further facilitate access to the seaport, enhancing its strategic significance.
“When the Federal Ministry of Blue Economy was established, I was happy, and Bayelsa became the first to establish a Ministry of Blue Economy at the state level. As part of our effort to open up the maritime environment, we are constructing the Nembe-Brass Road and the other senatorial roads, which we believe when completed will open up the maritime environment.
“For the Agge seaport, which is in the western flank of Bayelsa State, we are willing to work with you to ensure that it comes to fruition,” ths governor said.
Responding, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, acknowledged Nigeria’s untapped maritime resources and the federal government’s commitment to harnessing them.
Oyetola expressed willingness to collaborate with Bayelsa State through Public Private Partnerships, in ensuring that both the state and federal governments work together to bring the Agge seaport to fruition.
He described the Agge Deep Seaport, as “a key project that holds great promise for strengthening regional maritime infrastructure.”
