10 April 2013, Cairo – Egypt and Saudi Arabia are to sign agreements soon for electricity linkage between the two countries.
The agreements are to be signed within a month, reports said, citing Saudi cabinet vote on Tuesday for completion of the project based on its importance to the two nations.
The project provides for the exchange of 3,000 megawatt of power between the two countries’ networks.
It is also expected to foster comprehensive electricity linkage for the Arab countries, given that the Egyptian and Saudi electricity networks constitute 85 per cent of the Arab electricity capabilities.
Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Energy, Ahmed Emam, said the estimated cost of the Egyptian Saudi electricity linkage has hit $3 billion, with each side expected to pay the cost of implementing the project on its land.
