Abuja — The European Union, EU, is funding the Solar for Health project in Plateau State with the aim of providing sustainable solar power solutions to over 25 Primary Healthcare Centres, PHCs, across the 17 Local Government Areas of the state.

The initiative is part of the Nigeria Solar for Health Project, NISHP, designed to enhance access to reliable electricity for medical equipment at healthcare facilities in the country.

To push the project in Plateau State, being funded in partnership with the the state government, the EU has committed 1.7 million euros for the project’s implementation by NTU International and 8.7 million euros for infrastructure being managed by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit, GIZ.

At the launch of the project, the Head of Green and Digital Economy at the EU Delegation in Nigeria and ECOWAS, Inga Stefanowicz, stressed the EU’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s energy sector through initiatives like the Solar for Health project.

According to her, the Solar for Health project is a significant step in the partnership between the EU and Plateau State, with the aim of providing reliable and clean energy in healthcare facilities.

Speaking on the potentials of the project, she disclosed that it would be supporting a minimum of 25 healthcare facilities across the state, thereby improving energy access and enhancing overall healthcare services.

Also speaking during the project launch, the Plateau State governor, Caleb Mutfwang, emphasised the important role of energy in providing quality healthcare, maintaining that energy access was key to powering life-saving equipment and ensuring effective medical care.

He said: “Without energy, our healthcare services are limited. This project is a game changer for Plateau State, and we are committed to its success.”

Earlier in a statement on Facebook, announcing the project, Governor Mutfwang had said: “I am proud to announce the launch of the Nigeria Solar for Health Project (NISHP) in Plateau State, an initiative designed to provide sustainable solar power solutions to over 25 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across our 17 Local Government Areas.

“This groundbreaking project, supported by the European Union (EU), marks a new chapter in our journey toward reliable, quality healthcare, especially in rural areas where power supply challenges have long hampered services.
“With the deployment of solar energy, these PHCs will now have consistent electricity to power diagnostic equipment, store vaccines, and preserve life-saving medicines—a necessity for effective healthcare delivery.
“When we assumed office, less than 5% of over 1,000 PHCs in Plateau State were functional—a sobering reality that demanded urgent action. To date, we have renovated 82 PHCs, and this solar project is a vital step in strengthening these facilities to serve our people better.”
He added: “By ensuring that at least one PHC in every LGA receives solar power, we are improving not just healthcare but also empowering small businesses, as 75 enterprises within these facilities will also benefit from this clean energy initiative.
“We are grateful to our partners at the European Union for their unwavering support and shared vision.
“Their emphasis on renewable energy underscores a global commitment to sustainability, while Plateau State’s 30% counterpart funding reflects our determination to invest in the health and well-being of our people.
“This collaboration is a testament to what can be achieved when partnerships are rooted in trust and a shared mission. We are confident that the success of the Nigeria Solar for Health Project will not only improve healthcare but also position Plateau State as a beacon of progress and development in Nigeria.
“Together, we are creating a brighter future, one where access to quality healthcare and sustainable energy go hand in hand, driving economic growth and enhancing the quality of life for all Plateau citizens.”
