17 September 2015, Abuja – The Consumer Protection Council (CPC) is to start the prosecution of Benin and Enugu Distribution Companies for violating its summons to answer consumer complaints on exploitative electricity billing.
This was announced by its Investigative Panels Chairman, Mr. Emmanuel Ataguba, at the aborted hearing in Abuja.
The Councils action came on the heels of the non-appearance of the Benin and Enugu Distribution Companies without sufficient reason before the Panel, instituted to investigate numerous complaints of electricity consumers on estimated billings and non-provision of metres.
Also, the CPC has started investigating the operations of a Nigerian hospitality company, VIP Express Tourism Limited, following complaints alleging gross abuse of consumers’ rights.
