Lagos — The Federal Government has backed a ₦1 billion solar mini-grid project for the Federal University Dutse, FUD, in Jigawa State, as part of efforts to strengthen electricity supply at the institution.
The Energy Commission of Nigeria, ECN, approved the project under the Renewed Hope Solarisation Agenda for Alternative Energy. The project will deliver a 500-kilowatt solar power system for the university campus.
The university’s Director of Public Affairs, Abdullahi Bello, said work on the project is expected to commence soon and be completed within three months.
The solar mini-grid is expected to provide an alternative source of electricity for the university and reduce its dependence on conventional power sources.
The additional power capacity is expected to support teaching, research, administrative operations and other activities across the campus, while providing a more dependable electricity source for the institution.
The approval comes shortly after the ECN approved 100 solar-powered streetlights for the university, with 50 already ready for installation.
Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Ahmad Mohammed Gumel, commended President Bola Tinubu and ECN Director-General, Mustapha Abdullahi, for supporting the institution’s renewable energy development.
Gumel also said the Energy Commission was prepared to collaborate with the university on renewable energy research, creating an opportunity to strengthen the institution’s work in alternative energy.
The ₦1 billion project will add dedicated solar generation capacity to the university’s electricity infrastructure and reduce its reliance on conventional sources.
With completion expected within three months of commencement, the project is set to provide the institution with additional electricity capacity while supporting its academic and administrative activities.
