Lagos — The Federal Government has launched the northern corridor of its Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicle programme in Kano as part of efforts to promote cleaner and more affordable transportation across Nigeria.
The initiative, introduced through the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles, aims to reduce transport costs, support energy transition and improve the movement of goods and passengers nationwide.
Representing Vice President Kashim Shettima at the launch in Kano, Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Ibrahim Hadejia, described the programme as a major economic strategy to tackle inflation linked to high transportation costs.
He said the government remains committed to expanding access to cleaner and cheaper energy alternatives across the country.
Executive Chairman of the initiative, Ismaeel Ahmed, said the programme has grown beyond addressing fuel subsidy removal challenges to building a sustainable transportation system.
According to him, more than 300 conversion partners have been onboarded nationwide, including 41 centres in Kano, while over 7,000 Nigerians have already received technical training under the scheme.
Ahmed disclosed that the initiative has attracted more than $2 billion in investment commitments, describing Kano as a strategic commercial and logistics hub in Northern Nigeria.
Abba Yusuf said the programme would help reduce transportation burdens and improve living conditions for residents.
He added that the Kano State Government has already partnered with investors and relevant agencies to expand gas and electric mobility infrastructure across the state.
The event also featured the inauguration of two new CNG refuelling stations to strengthen clean energy transportation infrastructure in Kano and neighbouring states.
