04 November 2012, Sweetcrude, Owerri – Vice President Namadi Sambo said on Friday that the Federal Government had put in place a special programme to cater for post-flood era in the affected communities.
Vice President Namadi Sambo disclosed this when he visited Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo to commiserate with the flood victims.
He told the people at Nmahu town, the local government headquarters, that government had inaugurated a committee that would ensure that both Nigeria and the outside world addressed the unfortunate incident.
The Vice President, who expressed surprise about the level of devastation in the
area, described flood as a new phenomenon and prayed that the nation would not witness such again.
In his remarks, Gov. Rochas Okorocha of Imo described the Vice President’s
visit as remarkable, saying that the people of the local government area felt
neglected.
He said flood had become an issue of international concern, adding that the greatest challenge was that most of the area and people’s farmlands were seriously affected: “Homes and schools have been submerged and therefore
children cannot go to school,” Okorocha said.
The governor assured the people that the N400 million grants by the Federal
Government would be judiciously utilized, while the state government would supplement it.
Earlier, Mr Willy Uwakwe, who represented the flood victims, said the flood was enormous and thanked both the state government and other philanthropists for the rescue mission.
He said that the relief materials made available to the victims would only last for a little time and appealed for more aids from public spirited individuals.
