18 March 2013, Kano – The Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, said, Monday, that improved electricity supply to Kano would help to boost the city’s comatose industries.
Alhaji Muktar Baffa, the Assistant General Manager, (Public Affairs) in Kano Electricity Distribution Company, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Kano.
He said the company was currently receiving between 150 and 170 mega watts of electricity, although the state needed nearly 500 mega watts.
“This situation makes us to resort to load shedding, whereby we prioritise certain areas including government house, international airport, industrial zones, security agencies, CBN and the water board.
“When you see the number of people benefiting from this our system, you will understand that we are making the best out of the situation.
“Most people are at work during the day and need the light only in the night. Also, we are working on reducing overloading of our transformers around town.
“We are fixing all these so that when enough light starts coming, it will be easier to evacuate,” he said.
