01 October 2015, Lagos – Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, MWUN, yesterday assured aggrieved dockworkers that their eight months salary arrears would be paid any time from tomorrow, saying the management of Nigeria Ports Authority, NPA, had finally signed all papers relating to the payment.
President General of MWUN, Mr. Anthony Emmanuel Nted, said in Lagos that he expected the payment to begin either Friday or Monday, October 5, commending the workers especially Tally Clerks and Onboard security men for their patience and perseverance for the past eight months.
”I want to use this medium to commend the over 3000 Tally Clerks and On board Security men who had endured all these months, going through hardships while the struggle was on.
We equally commended the solidarity extended to the Tally Clerks and the On Board Security men by other members of the union. We hope we will not pass through this road again,” he said.
The union had given NPA up till tomorrow to effect payment or else all the ports formations across the country would be shut down from Monday.
This Friday deadline came after the quick intervention of the leadership of MWUN aborted a wild cat, (unplanned) strike that would have shut the nation’s ports from on Monday, September 28 over the unpaid wages.
