labour09 July 2014, Lagos – Leaders of organised labour in the nation’s  civil engineering and construction sector of the economy yesterday put the Federal  and state governments, especially  Lagos on notice, that  the operations of  China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, CCECC and all others Chinese construction companies in Nigeria would be shut next week over alleged unfair labour practices.

At a briefing in Lagos, leaders of National Union of Construction of Civil Engineering, Construction, Furniture and Wood Workers, NUCECFWW, who said the companies had been issued a 14-day ultimatum since last week, named other major culprits as China Railway Construction Company, CRCC, TEC Engineering Company, and China Gio Construction, CGC, Nigeria, Limited.

They lamented that even agreement reached with employers’ federation, National Joint Industrial Council, NJIC, had not been respected by the Chinese companies, claiming they had turned their offices and construction sites into slave camps.

Briefing journalists on behalf of other leaders of the union, its President-General, Mr. Amechi Augwuni, said the Chinese firms had been indulging in payment of slave wages, casualisation of workers, conveying workers to work places with open trucks and trailers, complete disregard to health and safety of workers, non-implementation of the NJIC, agreement, among others
