29 April 2013, Monrovia – The governments of Liberia and Ivory Coast have reached an agreement on energy co-operation.
The Memorandum of Understanding, MOU, is aimed at helping Liberia restore its energy sector which was paralysed by long years of devastating civil war.
The agreement was reached at the weekend at the end of a weeklong energy conference organised by the Liberian Ministry of Lands, Mines and Energy and visiting Ivorian delegation headed by its Minister of Energy Kone Moussa.
Liberia’s Lands, Mines and Energy Minister Patrick Sendolo had disclosed last week at the start of the energy conference that the meeting was between the two countries’ energy ministers so as to strategise on how to restore energy in Liberia’s through Ivory Coast.
Deputy Lands, Mines and Energy Minister for Operation Sam Ross, who represented Sendolo at the signing of the MOU with the visiting Ivorian team, said that it was very important for the two neighbouring countries to work together to restore energy in Liberia which is very important for the country’s growth and development.
“It is a very good thing for Liberia and Ivory Coast to work together in this direction,” Minister Ross indicated.
He told reporters that the visit of the Ivorian Energy Minister was a follow up to an earlier visit by the Liberian Minister to Ivory Coast this year for discussion on power restoration to Liberia.
The visiting Ivorian Minister, who spoke in French, lauded Liberia for the conference, saying his government looked forward to working with the Liberia Government to ensure that power supply was restored.
