04 June 201, Abuja – The Nigerian Electricity Consumers Advocacy Network (NECAN) has kicked against the plan by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs) to increase electricity tariff within the next few weeks.
The advocacy group maitained that it was an effort to shortchange unsuspecting electricity consumers despite poor electricity supply.
NECAN, which is a customer advocacy group set up by Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), is saddled with advancing the interests of electricity consumers in the country.
Speaking with journalists in Abuja, the Interim President, Mr. Tomi Akingbogun, chided NERC, for the deceit by electricity distribution companies.
It could be recalled that NERC chairman, Dr. Sam Amadi, had earlier given a directive to DISCOs not to effect the planned July 1, tariff increase without consultation with the major electricity consumers and civil society groups.
Akingbogun also said that the claim that NERC has given directives to the DISCOs to duly consult and agree with the electricity consumers’ before deciding on an appropriate tariff was false.
He said, ‘’it is not true that any credible stakeholder is involved in all the various customers’ forums with the discos. We are surprised that whenever we talk to the DISCOs they would reply us that they are working on the instructions of NERC. ”
