Port Harcourt — The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, has issued captive power generation permits to 11 entities, including Nigerian Breweries and several universities, enabling them to generate a total of 63.36 megawatts, MW, for self-consumption.
The permits aim to promote energy self-sufficiency, allowing these organizations to produce electricity independently from the national grid.
Nigerian Breweries, one of the largest beneficiaries, will generate 41MW across its facilities in Abia, Oyo, and Enugu states.
In addition to Nigerian Breweries, six Nigerian universities, including the University of Abuja, University of Calabar, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture and the Nigerian Defence Academy, NDA have received licenses to generate capacities ranging from 1.5MW to 12MW.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance Nigeria’s energy security and reduce the reliance on the overburdened national power grid.
Captive power generation is seen as a key solution to the country’s chronic electricity shortages, offering institutions greater control over their energy needs and supporting sustainable practices.
NERC’s decision reflects the growing shift toward decentralizing energy production, aligning with global trends for greater energy independence and sustainability in key sectors.
