27 August 2012, Sweetcrude, ASABA – THE Nigerian government is to carry out a nationwide study on electricity demand and supply aimed at bringing about quality service delivery in the power sector, according to Minister of Power, Prof. Bart Nnaji.
Nnaji disclosed this in Asaba on Saturday at the end of the two-day third quarter Power Summit organised by his ministry, saying there was no real figure as to how much power was needed in the country.
Data from the study would take the form of a census and would be captured in the 2013 census, the News Agency of Nigeria reported.
The minister also said his ministry would, by the first quarter of 2013, implement fully the automated scaler system.
Nnaji explained that this would be done with a view to identifying problems in any particular area.
He further said that the full transmission network project across the nation would help expand and stabilise the grid, adding that the quick win process to be implemented by the ministry would enhance the distribution capability.
According to him, one of the resolutions reached at the summit is that that there will be standardisation of the distribution network.
He also said there would now be improved power supply as the issue of meters had been resolved during the summit.
The minister explained that the meter distribution companies would work with the ministry to ensure progress in the meter procurement process.
Nnaji said the summit was held with a view to reviewing the progress being made in the sector and fine-tune the projects being handled by the ministry.
This, he said, was in line with President Goodluck Jonathan’s road map for the sector.
He stressed the need for continuous improvement in the sector as the various constraints were being addressed.
Nnaji expressed concern over the situation where more power was being generated yet the distribution companies could not handle it.
