Port Harcourt — The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, has affirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to revitalizing the mining sector as a major revenue source for Nigeria.

The Minister made this declaration recently while addressing participants of the National Defence College Course 33, highlighting President Tinubu’s reforms that have positioned Nigeria as a leading destination in Africa’s mining industry.

Alake listed the reforms to include the establishment of Mining Marshals to combat illegal mining, incorporation of the Nigeria Solid Minerals Company, noting that these reforms have attracted global attention to the country’s mining industry.

He also emphasized Nigeria’s advocacy for local value addition, leading to the creation of the African Minerals Strategy Group, where he serves as inaugural chairman.

“Several key initiatives aimed at tackling sector challenges, such as the establishment of Mining Marshals to combat illegal mining, the incorporation of the Nigeria Solid Minerals Company, and the launch of the digitized Electronic Mining Cadastre, EMC+ system to streamline licensing.

“We are also formalizing artisanal miners into cooperatives, with over 152 already formed.

“Nigeria’s advocacy for local value addition has led to the creation of the African Minerals Strategy Group, where I was elected as the inaugural chairman. This initiative emphasizes that mineral extraction should include processing to benefit citizens.”

The Minister also urged Course 33 participants to prioritize national interests over personal gains, emphasizing the need for a transformative mindset.
