Port Harcourt — Nigeria has taken a decisive step toward clean mobility and industrial diversification as the Federal Government signed an agreement with South Korea to establish an electric vehicle, EV, manufacturing plant in the country.
The Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, was signed by the Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. John Enoh, on behalf of the Federal Government, and representatives of South Korea’s Asia Economic Development Committee, AEDC.
The partnership is designed to accelerate Nigeria’s transition to clean energy while strengthening local manufacturing capacity through technology transfer, investment mobilisation, human capital development, and innovation in research and design.
Under the agreement, the EV project will be implemented in phases, beginning with vehicle assembly before scaling up to full in-house manufacturing.
When fully operational, the facility is projected to have an annual production capacity of about 300,000 electric vehicles.
The initiative is also expected to generate significant employment, with estimates of up to 10,000 direct and indirect jobs, while positioning Nigeria as an emerging hub for electric mobility in Africa.
The agreement aligns with the Federal Government’s broader industrialization and energy transition agenda, aimed at reducing carbon emissions, cutting fuel import dependence, and driving sustainable economic growth through local value addition.
