Port Harcourt — The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Power, Alhaji Mahmuda Mamman, has emphasized the crucial role of electricity in driving development, stating that “no meaningful development can take place without electricity.”
This statement was made during a meeting with the Agence Française de Développement, AFD, where discussions centered around transforming Nigeria’s power sector.
This is as the AFD has pledged to support Nigeria’s power sector transformation through financial support, technical expertise, and collaboration with Nigerian stakeholders.
“Power is the bedrock for development and without electricity, there is no meaningful development that is going to take place,” Alh. Mahmuda Mamman noted.
Also speaking, a representative of AfD, Mamadou Diarra, said the agency’s vision for Nigeria’s power sector includes increasing the share of renewables, ensuring universal access to clean energy, and establishing a modernized grid capable of integrating renewable energy.
“Our goal is to support Nigeria’s decarbonization journey by 2030. We believe that a transformed power sector can drive economic growth, reduce poverty, and promote environmental sustainability.”
“What AFD is doing, aligns with its roles in the power sector, which includes, ‘promoting renewable energy development, energy efficiency and grid modernization, strengthening of policy framework, capacity building and technology transfer and financing green energy project.”
The partnership between Nigeria and the AFD is expected to yield significant benefits for the country’s power sector, including increased access to renewable energy, improved energy efficiency, and a more modernized grid.
