Port Harcourt — The Rivers State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has issued a strike threat over the non-payment of local government workers’ salaries since February 2025 and the failure to implement the new minimum wage across the state.
NLC Chairman in Rivers State, Comrade Alex Agwanwor, speaking in Port Harcourt on Friday, warned that workers would withdraw their services if their demands were not met by the end of March.
“We demand the immediate implementation of the new minimum wage across all local government levels in Rivers State this month,” Agwanwor declared.
“Salaries of all local government workers and all civil servants in the state must be paid on or before the end of March. If this is not done, we will begin steps to withdraw our members from their duties in both the local government and public service.”
In a swift reaction, the Rivers State Government has approved the payment of March salaries for civil servants, pensioners, and suspended political appointees.
In a statement signed by Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Ibibia Worika, the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral (Rtd) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, directed the Accountant-General to ensure prompt salary disbursement.
“In keeping with our commitment to the good people of Rivers State, the Sole Administrator has approved the payment of March salaries for all civil servants, public servants, pensioners, and all suspended political appointees. The Accountant-General has been directed to remit payments without delay,” the statement read.
