Lagos — The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria LNG Limited, NLNG, Dr. Philip Mshelbila, says the company was looking to the future for further expansion with more trains, which would act as catalysts for the continued advancement of the Nigerian gas sector.

He stated this as the company announced that its ongoing seventh gas plant, popularly known as the NLNG Train-7 project, was currently about 50 percent completed.

The completion of the Train-7 project would increase NLNG’s production capacity by 35 percent from 22 million tonnes per annum to 30 million tonnes per annum.

The NLNG is currently planning an additional 8th train at its production plant on Bonny Island in Rivers State, with the final investment decision, FID, by the shareholders yet to be taken.

The company said the Train 8 project would deepen gas utilisation in the country and lay emphasis on the reduction of carbon emissions.

NLNG is owned by four shareholders, namely, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited with 49% stake, Shell Gas B.V. (25.6%), TotalEnergies Gaz & Electricite Holdings (15%), and Eni International N.A. N. V. S.àr.l (10.4%).

Meanwhile, the Nigeria LNG is projected to have sold 9.4 billion cubic metres of LNG to European countries following the boycott of Russia’s crude oil and gas over that country’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

European Union’s Commissioner for Energy in Nigeria, Ms. Kadri Simson, who disclosed this, said though the EU was promoting energy transition away from fossil fuels, it will continue to rely on LNG in the short term.

Simson, who spoke during a visit to the NLNG plant on Bonny Island, described Nigeria as a reliable partner and noted that the country has the potential, to export more LNG to Europe between now and 2027.
