    NNPC commits to promotion of functional education

    15 August, 2011, Sweetcrude, Abuja – The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, has reaffirmed its commitment to sustain the sponsorship of functional secondary educational system through its annual quiz competition that would encourage students to study courses that would impact on the Oil and Gas Industry in Nigeria.

    The Group General Manager Group Public Affairs Division of the Corporation, Dr. Levi Ajuonuma stated this commitment Monday at the 9th NNPC National Quiz Competition at the NNPC Towers, Abuja.

    The NNPC spokesman said that the Corporation would continue to contribute its quota to nation building by awarding scholarship to Secondary School students who distinguish themselves in the Corporation’s annual quiz competition.

    “As a Corporation, we would continue to touch the lives of our secondary school students positively by encouraging them to study courses such as Engineering, Geology and other science related courses, courses that are skilled based and that would add value to the dynamic Petroleum Industry in the country and world over,” Ajuonuma stated. .

    He maintained that winners of the quiz competition in the past eight years have made the Corporation proud as they have graduated as high flyers from various institutions across the country.

    “We are convinced that allowing students to test their academic ability through a well organized and highly competitive quiz exercise like this would help stimulate the much needed competition in our education system. We pay attention to practical subjects so as to build and strengthen the ability of the students to achieve practical application of what is being taught in classroom.”

    The NNPC spokesman disclosed that the winners of the competition would be awarded full undergraduate scholarship.

    Speaking in a similar vein, the Education Adviser of the United States Embassy, Dalhatu Hamiza commended the Corporation for its laudable scholarship scheme to students and revealed that as part of efforts to support the NNPC, the U.S Embassy also offers similar sponsorship programme to students who excel in their academic pursuits.

    Students from six states namely Borno, Delta, Ondo, Kaduna, FCt and Enugu are participating in this year’s NNPC Quiz competition.
