Port Harcourt — The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPC Ltd, has confirmed that vandals attempting to steal crude oil were responsible for the fire at its Buguma Wellhead 008 in Rivers State.

In a statement signed by Olufemi O. Soneye, Chief Corporate Communications Officer, NNPC Ltd revealed that the vandals’ sabotage targeted the Christmas Tree, causing severe damage to the well’s back pressure valve and igniting the fire.

The wellhead is operated by NNPC Eighteen Operating Ltd, NEOL, a subsidiary of the company.

“This unfortunate act of sabotage, which also resulted in severe damage to the well’s back pressure valve, reflects a disturbing pattern of repeated attacks on wellheads in the zone. Since March 2023, crude oil theft on this asset has been persistent, with criminals now resorting to extreme measures, including the use of dynamite to destroy installations and illegally access hydrocarbons,” the statement read.

NNPC Ltd reiterated its commitment to combating these fires and reducing the financial losses caused by crude oil theft and vandalism, noting the significant burden such activities place on the nation’s economy.

The company assured the public that it is working closely with relevant security agencies to put an end to these criminal activities.

“NNPC Ltd remains committed to combating these fires and mitigating the financial losses associated with these criminal activities, which place a significant burden on the nation’s economy,” the statement added.

Additionally, NNPC Ltd reaffirmed its dedication to supporting communities impacted by such destructive activities, promising continued relief efforts.

“NNPC Ltd reaffirms its commitment to supporting communities affected by these destructive activities and will continue to provide necessary relief efforts to mitigate the impact on those affected,” Soneye concluded.
