23 August 2012, Sweetcrude, ABUJA – DISCUSSIONS betweeen Nigeria’s Federal Government and organised labour on severance package for workers of Power Holding Company of Nigeria has been adjourned till Tuesday next week.
This is to enable the parties harmonise their positions with a view to possibly reaching an amicable solution to the crisis.
Peter Esele, president of Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, disclosed this to news men, Wednesday in Abuja after a closed-door meeting held in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Pius Anyim.
The meeting was between representatives of Labour – TUC, Nigeria Labour Congress and the National Union of Electricity Employees – and the government represented by the Minister of Labour, Mr. Emeka Wogu.
“The meeting was more of a preliminary meeting and we have adjourned to meet by 3:00 pm on Tuesday next week,” he said.
According to him, “The government delegation promised to be around while la our will also have theirs. We just have terms of reference on what we need to do and by Tuesday we will carve out the terms of reference.”
“The Federal Government will come with its own, labour will come with its own and we will come out with a middle way approach,” he added.
Esele also stated that the proposed threat of strike would no longer commence because “we are still talking and negotiation is on.”
