17 June 2013, Birnin Kebbi – A Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, high tension transmission tower collapsed at the weekend in Kebbi State. It was gathered that the incident occurred around the area where three other towers collapsed recently.
Last month, a violent storm affected three high tension towers that carry power from Kainji to Kebbi centre, thereby crippling business activities in the affected states and parts of Niger Republic.
General Manager, Transmission, at PHCN, Abuja, Dr. Abubakari Atiku Tambuwal, while confirming the incident said following the collapse of another high tension tower at the weekend, the PHCN authorities will need three days to restore power in the affected areas.
Speaking to newsmen in Birnin Kebbi, the General Manager said, “Now that four towers are affected, we need two to three more days. People should be patient with us.
“The PHCN has restored electricity back to Kebbi and Niger Republic by borrowing 132,000.00 volts via Kaduna, Zaria, Gusau, Funtua and Talata Mafara line in order to cushion the effect of hardship to people. Though, there is load shedding, let everybody benefit with two, two hours service”.
He assured farmers whose farmlands were effected that the Federal Government will compensate them, adding that a list has been collected through the head of the village.
