Port Harcourt — In response to the ravaging flood in Bayelsa State and the attendant impact on the livelihood, the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company has approved the sum of N50,000 each for 187 employees in its Bayelsa region as palliative.

    *Flooding ravages Bayelsa communities.

Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of PHED, Dr Benson Uwheru, who gave the approval said management thought it expedient at a time like this for the company to demonstrate, beyond rhetorics, that its employees are the most important elements in its operations.

Uwheru explained that the need to support its employees in Bayelsa State financially was imperative, as flood has completely cut off the state from human and vehicular movement, leading to scarcity of goods and services as well increased in cost of living.

The PHED boss added that the gesture was in line with its Health, Safety and Environment policy, as well as its objective to take environmental issues beyond its impact on the environment, to how they affect the social, psychological, emotional, physical and economic wellbeing of its employees.

“Due to the historic flooding in Bayelsa state, the state has been cut off from the world, making it impossible for people and materials to enter or leave the state, consequently leading to scarcity of resources and exorbitant cost of living that has affected our workforce in that state. Therefore, it became imperative to support them at this critical time.

“Available information and pictures show the extent of damages caused by the flood disaster, resulting to buildings and power assets being submerged, crops destroyed, and people are now living in very difficult conditions in the state.

“Though the company’s operations and revenue collection have been negatively impacted by the flood, due to huge destruction of power transformers and other valuable assets, it is important that we support and motivate our staff at this time so that when normalcy returns in the region, they will be in the best state of mind to deliver excellent services to our esteemed customers.

“Our employees are our greatest asset, we treasure them and care about them.”
