Ekurhuleni metro spokesperson, Themba Gadebe, said preliminary investigations into the explosion at Kempton Park’s Aston Manor substation in the early hours of Friday morning revealed possible cable fault.

Engineers will confirm the early findings when the new equipment is installed and the repair process complete.

“However, at this stage it looks like the Bonaero Park feeder cables caused the fault. It is important to emphasise that all our substations are up to date in terms of their maintenance schedules,” said Gadebe.

The explosion caused the power supply interruption in several areas of Kempton Park including Aston Manor, Nimrod Park, parts of Pomona, parts of Glen Marais and Bonaero Park.

Gadebe said the municipality apologises for the inconvenience caused.
