The Rivers State Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, and members of the Nigerian Rural Electrification Agency (REA) led by its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Abba Abubakar Aliyu, at the Government House in Port Harcourt today.

    – Partners with REA to boost power access

Port Harcourt — In a significant move to accelerate rural development, the Rivers State Government has pledged its full support to the Nigerian Rural Electrification Agency (REA) to expand electricity access to underserved communities across the state.

The commitment was made by the Administrator of Rivers State, His Excellency Vice Admiral (Rtd) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, during a high-level meeting with a delegation from the REA led by its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Abba Abubakar Aliyu, at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Thursday.

Vice Admiral Ibas emphasized that rural electrification is not just about providing light but also about driving socio-economic transformation. He noted that his administration has prioritized infrastructure development, security, and economic recovery, with rural electrification playing a key role in empowering communities.

“A critical component of our agenda is ensuring that rural communities have access to reliable electricity, which directly impacts education, healthcare, agriculture, and small-scale industries,” the Administrator stated. “By partnering with the REA, we can unlock new opportunities for our people and stimulate sustainable growth.”

Addressing the Challenges of Riverine Communities
Given Rivers State’s difficult riverine terrain, the Administrator urged the REA to adopt innovative approaches to ensure electricity reaches remote areas. He commended the agency for its preliminary mapping and surveys while stressing the need for tailored solutions to overcome geographical barriers.

“We must consider the unique challenges of electrifying riverine communities, where difficult terrain has historically hindered development,” he said. “Our administration is keen on initiatives that will make all 23 local government areas productive and economically viable.”

    REA’s Commitment to Rivers State
Engr. Abba Abubakar Aliyu, the REA’s Managing Director, reaffirmed the agency’s dedication to providing electricity to rural and off-grid communities, regardless of location. He highlighted plans to deploy mini-grids and renewable energy solutions to bridge the power gap in underserved areas.

“Our goal is to ensure that every community in Rivers State has access to reliable electricity, which will boost economic activities and improve living standards,” Aliyu said. “We look forward to a strong partnership with the state government to achieve this.”
