“The fact remains, if government wants the power sector to succeed, payments have to be made. If the Gencos don’t get enough fund to pay for gas, generation of electricity will crash.”
He explained that the inability of the firms to meet their obligations to customers by supplying them electricity regularly, meters, and other equipment, was as a result of the debts which run into billions of naira.
Although, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) provided a N701 billion facility, to assist NBET in meeting its payment obligations from the generation invoices to ease the liquidity challenges, the Gencos are yet to get full payment of all the outstanding debts.
“It is important that we state that there is no more interested party in the comprehensive metering of our electricity consumers than the Discos. It is our hope and expectation that such metering will be achieved sooner rather than later.”
Following the expiration of the deadline, NERC further directed that MD customer that was not metered by March 1, shall not pay any electricity bill presented by a distribution company on the basis of estimated billing methodology.
Oduntan urged the federal government to extend its interventions to all segments of the electricity supply chain rather than focusing solely on the generation segment.
Akah noted that, “The greatest problem we have today is that there is a high level of collection inefficiency by the Discos. Regrettably, while the report from the Discos show a certain level of collection inefficiency, the same report from the MO and NBET show that the Discos are unfairly withholding close to two-third of the total revenue collected from the electricity market.
