The OPL 245, an oil field believed to be the largest in Africa with over nine billion barrels of crude, was said to have been fraudulently acquired from the Federal Government by Malabu Oil and Gas Limited in 1998 and afterwards offered to oil giants, Shell and Agip, in a shady shady deal.

The group claimed its findings showed that N80 billion which was supposed to be used in developing the Niger Delta was used to prosecute the election of a former South-South governor, while N40 billion was also withdrawn from the NDDC coffers to prosecute the last re-run election in Rivers State.
Adoke said there was no way he could be held responsible for a transaction which was concluded about seven years before he became a minister.
SERAP also noted that allegations of corruption in the energy sector have “resulted in the epileptic and interrupted supply of electricity and corresponding deprivation and denial of the citizens’ access to quality healthcare, adequate food, shelter, clothing, water, sanitation, medical care, schooling, and access to information.”
The scandal had been a subject of a worldwide investigation in five different countries including in Nigeria by the EFCC.
He said, “I want Nigerians to realise that what this government inherited after 16 years of PDP government was no savings, no infrastructure, no power, no rail, no road and no security.”
He asked the Federal government to publish how much the region has received since the 13 percent derivation started.
