Port Harcourt — President Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to the Ogoni martyrs, including renowned environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, on the 2024 Ogoni Martyrs Remembrance Day.
In a special message, the President expressed his administration’s unwavering commitment to healing historical wounds, fostering reconciliation, and promoting sustainable development for all ethnic nationalities in Nigeria.
Speaking on the significance of the day, President Tinubu joined the National Youth Council of Ogoni People, NYCOP and Ogoni citizens in honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the defense of Ogoniland.
According to the President, the theme of this year’s commemoration, “After Price, Comes Prise,” underscores a collective effort to learn from past struggles while working toward a more inclusive and prosperous future.
“Today, we remember the Ogoni martyrs, including Ken Saro-Wiwa, and all who have given their lives in the pursuit of justice. We honor their memory by committing ourselves to a future of peace, justice, and sustainable development, particularly for the Niger Delta and other communities affected by environmental degradation.”
The President noted that Ogoni people’s decades-long struggle against the harmful effects of oil exploration in their region culminated in the tragic execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other Ogoni leaders in 1995.
“These leaders had been vocal in their opposition to the environmental destruction caused by oil companies operating in Ogoniland.”
The President in a statement by his Media Aide, Bayo Onanuga, emphasized the need to address historical grievances and reiterated that his administration is committed to ensuring that such injustices are not repeated.
He further called for greater unity among Nigeria’s diverse communities, stressing the importance of mutual respect and constructive engagement to build a stronger nation.
“As we remember the Ogoni Martyrs, let us honor their legacy by ensuring that the voices of all Nigerians are heard and respected,” the President added.
