Port Harcourt — A tragic incident has unfolded in Port Harcourt, the capital of oil-rich Rivers State, as a young couple was discovered dead in their apartment in the old Port Harcourt Township axis of the city.

According to sources familiar with the situation, the victims—identified as Peace and her male lover—had reportedly placed a generator in the passage near their room before retiring for the night.

A resident of the compound, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the shocking discovery:

“We became worried when we noticed that they hadn’t come out of their room in the morning. We knocked on their door multiple times, but there was no response. That’s when some of us decided to force the door open. What we saw was heartbreaking—their lifeless bodies on the floor.”

Alarmed by the situation, some neighbours rushed to the Central Police Station, CPS, in old Port Harcourt Town to report the incident. Detectives were immediately dispatched to the scene, where they confirmed the deaths and later transported the bodies to the mortuary.

The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the incident, with its spokesperson, Superintendent of Police, Grace Iringe-Koko, stating that preliminary investigations suggest the couple may have died from inhaling toxic fumes from the generator.

“From our initial findings, all indications point to generator fumes as the likely cause of death. However, further investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident,” SP Iringe-Koko said.

The tragic event has sparked fresh concerns over the dangers of using generators in enclosed spaces, as experts continue to warn against the risks of carbon monoxide poisoning.
