    US rig count up by two

    oil rig28 November 2013, News Wires – The number of oil and gas rigs drilling in the US rose by two for a total of 1763 in a short week, according to data from Houston-based services giant Baker Hughes.

    The number of oil rigs rose by four to 1391 while the number of gas-directed rigs fell by two to 367, Baker Hughes said.

    Baker Hughes released its vaunted weekly rig count on Wednesday instead of Friday this week in advance of the Thanksgiving holiday in the US.

    The Marcellus shale in the Appalachian basin felt the biggest swing this week, losing three rigs for a total of 87. The Utica shale gained two to total 37.

    The Permian in New Mexico and West Texas, as usual, led all basins with 470 rigs but was flat on the week.

    The Eagle Ford gained a rig for 227. The Barnett was up one for 34.

    The Mississippian gained two for 77. The Granite Wash was up by one on 62.

    The Williston, home of the prolific Bakken, gained one for 180.

    Most states moved slightly on the week. West Virgina was among the biggest movers, losing three rigs for 34.

    Texas and Oklahoma gained three apiece for totals of 845 and 175, respectively.
