Port Harcourt — Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering support for the Nigerian Navy, stressing that strengthened maritime security is crucial to protecting the state’s economic assets and sustaining national revenue.
Governor Fubara gave the assurance on Thursday when the newly appointed Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, paid him a courtesy visit at Government House, Port Harcourt.
Congratulating the Naval Chief on his appointment, Governor Fubara described him as a seasoned professional whose “integrity, leadership, and professional excellence” stand out.
He said Rivers State would continue to collaborate with the Navy to secure strategic waterways, safeguard coastal communities, and protect vital installations in Nigeria’s oil-rich corridor.
“I want to thank the Nigerian Navy for protecting our people and our environment. Your work is not just a duty; it is a shared responsibility that ensures the safety and prosperity of Rivers State,” the Governor said.
Governor Fubara noted that with the Navy’s superior technology, manpower, and tactical capability, improved collaboration was essential to secure the marine corridor and reduce threats to the state’s economy. “We need to work together for us to succeed,” he emphasised.
He assured the Navy of continued logistical and operational support and invited Vice Admiral Abbas to tour the state to experience the hospitality of Rivers people.
Vice Admiral Idi Abbas expressed appreciation for what he described as Rivers State’s consistent and strategic contributions to national maritime security.
He recalled the state’s previous donation of six security gunboats and other infrastructural support to naval units, describing them as “strong demonstrations of partnership and commitment to national security.”
He said his visit formed part of a nationwide tour to assess operational readiness since assuming command on October 30, 2025, stressing that Rivers State hosts several critical energy installations under the Navy’s protection mandate.
The Naval Chief added that the state remains central to naval training and operations, with several key formations located within its boundaries.
He appealed for sustained collaboration as the Navy scales up efforts to secure the maritime domain and protect Nigeria’s economic lifelines.
The visit further consolidated the long-standing partnership between the Rivers State Government and the Nigerian Navy, both working to enhance security, stability, and safe operations for residents and businesses across the state.
