Port Harcourt — Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has applauded the Nigerian Army, Six Division Port Harcourt for their efforts in curbing crimes and criminality in the state, particularly illegal oil bunkering activities.
Wike particularly extoled the General Officer Commanding, Six Division for efforts put in place since his assumption of office to fight all forms of criminality especially, in areas of crude oil theft and kidnapping in his area of responsibility.
Governor Wike, said these while appearing as the special guest of honour during the Six Division West African Social Activities, WASA 2022 at the Port Harcourt barracks.
The governor, represented by the Chief of Staff, Government House, Port Harcourt, Chief Emeka Woke, who commended the military for its active role in fighting crime in the State, also urged officers and men of the 6 Division to work with personnel of other security to provide level playing for all political parties and politicians in the State.
“We want to thank you for the relationship we have enjoyed. You have also contributed a lot in terms of crime fighting.
“I wish to commend the General Officer Commanding of 6 Division for efforts put in place since his assumption of office to fight all forms of criminality, especially in the area of oil bunkering, kidnapping in areas of responsibility.
“Your efforts has brought about maintenance of peace in the region, I want to congratulate you and the entire personnel of Six Division for a job well done, and also to urge you not to relent in your effort. Let me use this opportunity to solicit for support of all stakeholders to join hands with the Division to eradicate all forms of criminalities in our society.
“The government of Rivers State has had a wonderful working relationship with men and personnel of this Division. At the time this Division was created the administration of His Excellency Nyesom Wike played a very vital role in providing the needed logistics for effective take off of this Division. We provided accommodation, vehicles and enhanced the early take off and stability of this Division.”
Earlier, the GOC 6 Division, Major General Olufemi Oluyede, explained that West African Social Activities was customary in the Nigerian Army to mark the end of each training year as well as ushering Nigerian Army into the new year.
Oluyede who was represented by the Commander 6 Military Intelligence Brigade, Brigadier General Aliyu Idris, commended the Chief of Army Staff, Leut. General Farouk Yahaya, for the support in training and welfare of personnel of the Nigerian Army and Six Division in particular.
“The Division is a relatively new formation, it’s area of responsibility covers Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Delta State with primary mandate of maintaining peace in the region, in line with our constitutional mandate of aide to civil authority for economic and socio-cultural development of the entire region.
“Let me cease this opportunity to solicit for the support of all stakeholders to join hands with the Division to eradicate all forms of criminalities in our society.”
Highlight of the event was presentation of awards to some personnel of the Nigerian Army who distinguished themselves in the previous year.
