Port Harcourt — Governor Alex Otti has revealed plans to disconnect Abia State entirely from Nigeria’s national electricity grid, as part of a bold push for energy independence.
Speaking recently, Otti disclosed that his administration is already in advanced talks with foreign partners to drive the initiative.
“My commissioner for power is currently in the Netherlands negotiating a deal,” he said, describing the project as a private-sector-driven effort with strong government backing.
The governor made the state’s ambition clear, “Detach the entire state from the national grid. That’s our vision.”
He explained that the move is rooted in the need to secure reliable electricity supply for residents and businesses, amid persistent challenges with the country’s power infrastructure.
“It is all for us,” Otti added, underscoring the public interest behind the plan.
The development highlights a growing trend among subnational governments seeking alternative energy solutions to bypass Nigeria’s unstable national grid and boost economic productivity.
