Port Harcourt — Chevron Nigeria Limited, CNL, says it is making long-term transformative investments in Nigeria’s economy through Nigerian Content development, media capacity building, and community partnerships, with annual local contracting opportunities estimated at over $1 billion.
Speaking on the company’s impact, Olusoga Oduselu, General Manager, Policy, Government and Public Affairs, said Chevron’s approach is to ensure that the success of the larger society directly translates into the company’s business growth.
Oduselu made this known in a goodwill message from Chevron on the 10th anniversary and annual lecture of GbaramatuVoice Newspaper, held in Abuja, recently.
“We recognize that the success of the larger society invariably translates to success in our business; and we believe it is in our long-term interest to add value to society as we create value for our stakeholders,” Oduselu stated.
On Nigerian Content, Oduselu noted that Chevron continues to create jobs and contract opportunities for local companies across its projects.
“Chevron Nigeria seeks to make human investments that deliver long-term transformative returns. This is achieved through our Nigerian Content development activities. In Nigeria, Chevron supports Nigerian Content development by providing employment to Nigerians, and contract opportunities in all our projects up to an estimated annual average over $1 billion,” he said.
Chevron also highlighted its extensive investments in journalism training and media partnerships, describing the press as a vital partner in national development.
“Chevron Nigeria values its partnership with the media for the development of the society. That is why we sponsor the Advanced Writing and Reporting Skills, AWARES, programme in collaboration with Pan Atlantic University, Lagos. Over 120 journalists have benefitted since its inception in 2014. We have also partnered with the Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, to train about 300 journalists in Warri, Asaba, Lagos, and Abuja in the last three years,” Oduselu explained.
On community development, Chevron said it pioneered the Global Memorandum of Understanding, GMoU, model in 2005, contributing billions of naira to Regional Development Committees for community-led projects.
“Currently, we are working with the relevant government and community stakeholders to transit to the Host Community Development Trusts, HCDTs, under the Petroleum Industry Act, 2021. Also, through Chevron’s Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta, PIND, we are impacting hundreds of lives in the Niger Delta and supporting economic empowerment in the region,” he added.
Chevron, Nigeria’s leading domestic gas supplier since 2015, further disclosed significant progress in its carbon reduction agenda.
“Besides oil exploration and production, Chevron Nigeria Limited is the highest contributor of high-quality domestic gas in Nigeria since 2015. Through investments in gathering and processing of associated gas, routine flaring has been reduced by over 97% in the past 10 years in CNL’s operations,” Oduselu said.
According to him, Chevron remains committed to providing affordable, reliable, and cleaner energy to Nigerians while positioning itself as a major player in the global energy transition.
“Chevron is one of the world’s leading integrated energy companies. We believe affordable, reliable and ever-cleaner energy is essential to achieving a more prosperous and sustainable world,” he said.
