11 April 2012, Sweetcrude, ADO EKITI – Ekiti State Government says it has awarded electricity supply contract that would connect five rural communities in the state to the national grid.

Mr. Kayode Jegede, special adviser to the state governor on infrastructure and public utilities, who disclosed this, put the cost of the project at N110 million.

Jegede made this known while touring the five communities, which, according to him, had been without light for 600 years.

The beneficiary communities are Aba Osun in Ekiti West Local Government Area, Odo-Uro (Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area), Aba Ekiti (Ado Local Government Area), Eda-Ile (Ekiti East local goverment area) and Aba-Fatunla (Ikole Local Government Area).

The special adviser said electrification projects for the five communities were part of projects awarded in the first 12 months of the current administration in the state.

Speaking during Jegede’s visit, the Eleda of Eda-Ile, Oba Omotayo Adeniran, attested to the special adviser’s statement that the communities have not had electricity in 600 years.

The monarch noted that the Federal Government started the electrification project 10 years ago but abandoned it half-way. He hailed the state government for revisiting the project.
