Doha, QATAR – Amidst a global pandemic raising serious concerns about reversing the progress made on sustainable development, the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) will organise its next public lecture on “The Energy Transformation: the Way Forward”, to be delivered by His Excellency Francesco La Camera, Director General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) on Tuesday 20th October at 2:00 p.m. Doha time.

This online lecture by HE La Camera will cover the expected quintupling of renewable energy in the global energy mix from current levels to 10% by 2050. The GECF Secretary General HE Yury Sentyurin will present the Member Countries’ view and contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

IRENA was officially established in 2009 as an intergovernmental organisation that supports countries in their transition to a sustainable energy future. The Agency promotes the widespread adoption and sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy, including bioenergy, geothermal, hydropower, ocean, solar and wind energy in the pursuit of sustainable development, energy access, energy security and low-carbon economic growth and prosperity. Its current membership stands at 160 countries and the European Union.

The GECF lectures and workshops feature policymakers and experts, who are invited to share their knowledge and insights on contemporary issues related to the gas industry and its interconnected influencers of geopolitics and economy. These activities form part of the GECF long-term strategy to promote natural gas as the fuel of choice for sustainable development.
