Lagos — The Standards Organisation of Nigeria, SON, has taken a significant step toward building a safe, sustainable and globally competitive electric mobility ecosystem with the successful hosting of the 2nd Meeting of the National Technical Committee on Electric Mobility Standards, NTC 11, in Lagos.

The meeting brought together key stakeholders from government, industry, academia and development partner organisations to accelerate the development of standards that will guide the growth of Nigeria’s electric vehicle sector.

The Director General/Chief Executive of SON, Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke, represented by the Deputy Director, Standards Development Directorate, Mr. Irimiya Mamza, reaffirmed SON’s commitment to developing standards that address safety, interoperability, battery management, communication protocols and charging infrastructure while reflecting Nigeria’s unique operating environment.

Participants reviewed critical international standards for electric vehicle safety, battery systems and charging infrastructure, while also considering local realities such as power fluctuations, hybrid charging systems and cybersecurity requirements.

The meeting ended with a renewed commitment by stakeholders to work together in developing a comprehensive national standards framework that will enhance safety, boost consumer confidence and support Nigeria’s energy transition and industrial growth agenda.
