24 October 2011, Sweetcrude, Enugu- Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has sent relief materials to victims of the July fuel tanker fire disaster in Enugu, South East Nigeria.

The items included 100 bags of rice, 150 bags of beans, 150 pieces of roofing sheets, 50 bags of three inch nails, 50 bags of zinc nail, 100 pieces of blankets, 100 pieces of bathing towel, 100 pieces of wax print wrappers, among others.

Officials of NEMA, who delivered the materials valued at millions of naira on behalf of the Nigerian Federal Government at the weekend, handed them over to the Enugu State government for onward distribution to the fire victims.

This came about a month after the state government also sent relief materials as well as cash donations to the victims.

The Enugu fuel tanker fire had occurred in July this year when the driver of a tanker laden with petrol, while negotiating a roundabout along the Enugu Prisons quarters, lost control of the vehicle, which caused it to fall.

The fire that followed killed many and destroyed property worth millions of naira with the police and prisons personnel whose barracks are in the vicinity recording more casualties.

Presenting the relief materials to the Enugu State government, the Director- General of NEMA, Alhaji Sani Sidi, sympathised with the affected persons and their families as well as the state government.

The NEMA boss was accompanied by the South-east Zonal Coordinator of the agency, Dr. Onimode Abdulahi Bandele, the Director of Enugu State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Mr. Joe Offor, as well as some other top officials of the organisation from its headquarters in Abuja.
